Where It All Began
Agriculture has been a backbone of the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede since its formation in 1886 as the Calgary Agricultural Society.
The mandates of the Agriculture Department are:
- To educate and inform the public about the industry,
- To offer livestock producers the opportunity to show case their animals and industry, and
- To develop programs that encourage the participation of the agricultural youth of Alberta and Western Canada.
The Calgary Stampede Agriculture Department showcases Agriculture all year long, presenting over 20 international stock show events and presentations during the 10-day Calgary Stampede. Of the total Stampede visitors, 66% of them will take in the Ag-zone during their visit.
Of the 48 committees within the Calgary Stampede, 22 committees drive the Agriculture programming. With this large base it is evident that Stampede Agriculture continues to reflect the strong commitment it has to the rural community and the important role Agriculture represents to the economy of Alberta.
